"It was the discovery of the century, possibly the millennium. After years of research and frustration we’d finally broken through. I was the man who led the team. Contact was established with the distant planet via radio waves, quite by chance one weekday afternoon. The creature, deformed, disgusting and terrifying to our human eyes, was at first glance primitive. Yet it had the technology to receive and respond to our transmissions both orally and visually from the depths of space. It could communicate via a language and even understand a little of what we were saying via hand signals and pictures.
Eventually after a few years of stressful work reliable translators were established. We could understand their language and they could understand ours. There were many questions to ask. The creature spoke of a terrible accident, an accident that had left it and all others scarred and sick. It spoke of the horror and death. It spoke of the lack of a cure and the struggle to rebuild its civilisation. It spoke of its planet, grey, dark and rough. It spoke of its former glories; it’s deep blue seas.”
